Show Up When It Counts

A demo can impress. The real test is whether it helps on a Tuesday.

I’ve sat through a lot of AI demos.

They’re genuinely impressive. The sample data is clean, the question lands exactly where the presenter wants it, the answer arrives beautifully formatted, and the room nods.

Then you go back to an actual transaction, and the demo conditions evaporate.

Why doesn’t the demo tell you anything?

Because a demo is a performance under ideal conditions and a real estate transaction is the opposite of ideal conditions.

Deadlines move. Details get missed. People don’t call you back. An underwriter raises a question nobody anticipated, the inspection surfaces something at 4pm on a Friday, and the document everyone assumed was signed is still sitting in an inbox.

None of that appears in a demo. All of it appears in your week.

What separates useful from impressive?

The hard day.

Useful technology is still working when the file gets messy. It doesn’t need perfect inputs to help. It doesn’t fail quietly when a date changes. And it doesn’t demand supervision at the exact moment you have the least attention to give, which is always when a deal is going sideways.

Impressive is a demo quality. Useful is a Tuesday quality. It’s the same argument I made about trust being earned through consistency: what counts isn’t the best day, it’s the ordinary ones and the bad ones.

What does showing up look like in practice?

Being there before you go looking. Knowing the deadline moved. Flagging the detail before it becomes a problem. Holding the state of the deal while every party chases their own piece of it.

Not louder. Not flashier. Present and correct on the day that’s already going badly, for the agent with three deals in motion and one of them wobbling.

AI doesn’t need to look impressive. It needs to show up when it counts.
